All Blacks Lose and Pumas Win
New Zealand lost on Saturday for the first time at home since the Lions Tour over a year ago. It also brought a 9-game winning run to an end. South Africa seem to be building nicely since the summer series against England and were finally able to bring the combination of brut force and creativity. Last week on social media there was a number of statistical reports underlying how unlikely a Springbok win would be, giving them a 2% chance. Well it seems 2% is better than nothing.
Despite the final score being within one score (36-34) it is great for international rugby that a team has been able to stand toe to toe with the All Blacks at home. It looks like South Africa are peaking at exactly the right time as we come into a World Cup year. Is it possible that New Zealand will be dethroned? Or is the result simply a blip on the Kiwi charge to victory in Japan.
It was a weekend of upsets in the Rugby Championships as Argentina won in Australia for the first time in 35 years. It was a close but deserved victory for Argentina as they picked up their second win on this years tournament (the first time they have won 2 games in a single tournament since joining the Championship).
You can catch all the highlights for free on YouTube and make sure you check out Israel Folau's bombed last minute try. He is one of the best in the world but that was a bad one!
Gallagher Premiership Update
My Rugby Weekend kicked off with Bristol against Gloucester on Friday night. Bristol were the better team and deserved the early lead but just did not have enough quality and experience to keep up with Gloucester who were led brilliantly by Danny Cipriani. Despite the loss, Bristol look like a good outfit and should have more than enough to stay up after heavy investment over the past couple of years.
Exeter and Saracens continue to lead the way with 3 bonus point wins to start the season. Wasps also came away with a great win over Leicester on Sunday. It looks like these 3 will be the teams to beat again this season.
Amateur Rugby Roundup
I spent the early part of last week in Colchester and visited Colchester RFC training on Tuesday night. Colchester was my first Rugby club as a child and I have many great memories there. The session on Tuesday was intense and competitive and it did not surprise me to read that they came away with a big home win on Saturday continuing a perfect start to the season.
On Saturday both Munich teams also walked away with bonus point wins at home with 2 strong performances. Looking forward to getting back on the training ground this week. A good week of Rugby all round!
